Tips from a recent septic pumping and township inspection in York County, Pa

When homeowners Bob and Patty needed their septic tank emptied, they gave us a call to request a quote. We directed them to our pricing page
where you can locate your township and find a price easily. They decided to schedule their pumping right away and our office manager was happy to add their routine service to our job calendar. We typically schedule jobs a week out, but we also offer same-day service when necessary. And if you're ever experiencing a back-up or an emergency, we have technicians on call 24/7.
On the day of Bob and Patty's septic service they had alerted us that no one would be home, so we offered to leave their invoice at the front door. If you're concerned about being present during your septic pumping, don't worry - you don't need to be home unless you need to talk to a technician. We can come and go quickly just like your lawn care provider or propane company.
Our technician, Keaton, was on the job for this routine pumping and he had all of the information we needed to locate the manhole and get started. The manhole cover was below grade, however, so it took us a few minutes to uncover it. Once the lid was opened, Keaton drug hoses to the backyard and lowered the end of the hose into the tank. From there, it was a simple waiting game. The vacuum from the pump truck was turned on and after a few minutes the tank was empty.
After pumping the septic tank, Keaton completed an inspection report for Chanceford Township, which requires residential pumping and inspection every 5 years. There are various factors that can increase the cost of your septic pumping and most can be avoided with regular maintenance. Our Chanceford, PA customers followed the every 5 year pumping ordinance so their tank was in great condition.
Things that can lead to a more costly tank cleaning include:
- Heavy solids
Heavy solids in your tank can increase disposal costs for us, and emptying a tank with built-up solids can mean we're on the job much longer than expected. - A buried manhole cover
If your tank cover is more than a few inches below ground, it can take hours to dig it open, delaying our schedule and sometimes requiring two technicians instead of one.
What You Should Know Before You Schedule Your Septic Tank Cleaning:
- Location of septic tank cover or manhole, and whether it is at or below grade
- How many gallons your tank holds and what size your tank is (some homes have multiple tanks)
- If you’re not sure what kind of tank you have or how many gallons it holds, don’t worry, many new homeowners are unsure of the specifics. Our technicians are happy to inspect your septic system to determine the size of your tank(s) and show you where to locate each of the components. It’s a great idea to make a diagram of your septic system and its layout so you know where parts are located for future reference.
